The Consultant Journey

Initial contact

George has recently graduated from University. In order to locate his next opportunity, he has added his CV to graduate job boards, reached out to his connections on social media and attended graduate employment fairs. George met with one of our internal recruiters at an employment event in London, and was invited to attend a managed interview day at our London HQ. This process is designed to gives graduates an insight into what it would be like to work as a recruitment consultant, taking part in role plays, learning about some of the day to day activities and testing themselves against some of our senior management in interview situations. Our Founder and UK MD Jonathan Ellerbeck is fanatical about offering the next generation an opportunity to develop a career within the recruitment industry, and can regularly be seen in the workshops!

How to prepare for interview

Interview Process

George enjoyed his experience at the managed interview day, which gave him an opportunity to showcase his eagerness to build a career in the recruitment industry.  George was impressed with the meritocratic nature of the organisation, our MD Jonathan started as a trainee consultant himself!  From speaking with current members of staff it became apparent to George that each member of staff knows exactly what they need to do in order to get promoted.

Gravitas was also impressed with George’s performance in the sessions, and invited George back to interview.   George met with numerous business managers in order for our skilled management team to distinguish George’s skillset and suitability for a career in recruitment.  George was able to articulate how driven an individual he is by using examples he’d thought about before the interview, demonstrated that he is money motivated and eager for a career where he can develop his leadership skills.  George also has a keen interest in mobile technology and application development, which was identified during an interview with our head of digital.  George was later offered a position within our digital team, as a trainee recruitment consultant!

In the UK, starting as a Trainee Recruitment Consultant you will be paid a basic salary of circa £18,000 - £20,000, depending upon location and experience.


George has now worked at Gravitas for 6 months.  George has been making regular placements and is adding to his commission week on week.  George has been signed off the Consultant Development Programme, embraced the challenge of the CDP, utilising the skills gained through the programme to make money and secure a promotion to Consultant.  (Please click here to read more about Training at Gravitas).  Training does not stop here at Gravitas, George has now enrolled in our Senior Consultant Development Programme (SCDP).  This programme is designed to take a consultant to the point where they are consistently performing at an exceptional level, it also allows the consultant to have an opportunity to mentor newer consultants, taking them on the same journey that the consultant will have been through previously.

During this time George has now made placements with a number of new start up digital agencies and application development companies, as well as some of Gravitas’ larger key accounts!  George has demonstrated an ability to source his own roles to recruit for, and is in regular contact with the best candidates on the market in order to deliver candidates and clients the solutions they require.

George also recently returned from on our crème-de-la-crème incentive in Mauritius, where he sipped cocktails on the beach with our Directors and partied late into the night!

We expect all our trainee consultants to earn between £25,000 - £40,000 in your first full year. Gravitas do not cap commission. Therefore, your earning potential is a direct correlation of personal success

Senior Consultant

George has now developed into a consistent salesperson and role model, acting as a mentor for new consultants entering the business.  18 months in now, George has just been signed off on his SCDP, and is now a Senior Consultant. George has received an increased basic, and improved his commission earning capabilities.  George has been delivering training sessions to his ‘rookies’, and regularly assists them by listening to calls and coaching best practice by embodying our company values of Respect, Integrity, Passion and Excellence.

Outside of working hours he is actively involved in organising new networking events within his market.

The talent George is displaying has been recognised, his manager has recommended that George start his Management Development Programme (MDP), which will provide George with the training and guidance required for you to become a highly successful leader, teaching you how to manage, mentor and coach the performance of others. It combines high level theoretical knowledge with practical components that will enable you to achieve your full potential and get the best out of those within your team.  This truly will allow George to take his career to the next stage.

Team Leader

Two and a half years into the business, George is now competing for top honours at Gravitas, and has been top Gravitas’ billing league.  He has also developed as a proven trainer.  George has now been signed off his MDP and is now a Team Leader at Gravitas.  Within this time George has progressed from an inexperienced eager-to-learn graduate to managing a team of seven consultants. He now delivers some of the CDP training to new starters and has begun to take responsibility for interviewing and recruiting staff for his own team.

George has also received another increase to his basic salary, which has allowed him to purchase his own house and new car!  George is now beginning to realise his potential within the industry, but is stull hungry for greater responsibility.  George has now started his Senior Management Development Programme (SMDP).  THE SMDP will provide George with the knowledge and skills to operate at the highest levels in our business. By the time George completes the SMDP he will be in a position to take responsibility for a large, complex part of our company at a strategic level.

Sales Manager

George has now worked at Gravitas for 4 years.   George has become the top salesperson at Gravitas worldwide, and has also consistently recruited, trained and developed some superb staff of his own.  For 6 months George ran his team in our London office, before realising an opportunity to start a new team in a new region for Gravitas!  Now based in New York (future destination for Gravitas), George has twenty staff reporting into him. He must keep a close eye on the operation of his side of the business and is expected to provide input to the Directors on company strategy.

Recognising his achievements, the Directors have allocated him equity in the Gravitas Recruitment Group. Our candidate can now realistically be looking at a substantial 6 figure salary as the company continues to grow.

George was offered Directorship at Gravitas Recruitment group in his fifth year with the company. Throughout George’s development at Gravitas he has presented the business with numerous options for new opportunities, which the board have decided to move forward with!  George’s ultimate career ambition is to become a millionaire before his 30th birthday, with the support of the board and Gravitas’ Operations Team, chances are George is on track to realise his ambition!
